Floodwaters Destroy 30-Year-Old Suspension Bridge in Kanchanaburi

KANCHANABURI, Thailand – A 30-year-old suspension bridge in Sai Yok district has been wrecked by surging floodwaters, with officials revealing the full extent of the damage after the water receded on 1 October 2026.

The Ban Had Ngio bridge had already been closed to all traffic because of the danger, but the force of the flood proved too much. Its pillars and main structure snapped and collapsed, the deck and supports were destroyed, and thick mud buried the approaches and the surrounding road.

The crossing is now completely severed.

Officials are surveying the wreckage before deciding on any temporary or permanent repairs or replacement, with no timeline yet announced for the work. Sai Yok is a popular base for visitors heading to national parks, riverside stays and attractions in western Kanchanaburi, and authorities warn that smaller roads and crossings can deteriorate rapidly after heavy rain or flash floods — even as water levels begin to drop.
